What do I need to register for as a new employer?

You recently employed someone or are planning on employing someone and need to know what to register for.

When determining what you have to register for will depend on the value of your employees' remuneration per month and the number of employees you have.

UIF:

The first thing you will have to register for is UIF with the Department of Labour as soon as you have an employee that works more than twenty-four (24) hours per month.

For more info, visit these articles on how to register for UIF and how to calculate UIF

Workman's Compensation:

The next thing you will have to register for is Workman's Compensation with the Compensation Fund when you have an employee that is:

  • permanently employed,
  • a domestic worker,
  • an apprentice or trainee farmworker, or
  • a worker paid by a labour agency.

You can find out more on how to register on the following website.

SDL:

You will be required to register for SDL as soon as you foresee that your total employee cost for the next 12 months will exceed R500,000.

There are certain entities exempt from paying SDL (see this article). They are still, however, required to register for SDL.

PAYE:

When one or more of your employee's salaries exceed the tax exemption threshold for the specified year. The tax threshold for employees under 65 is R87,300 for the tax year 1 March 2021 to 28 February 2022.
